Diversity = Variety
In a culture or society, diversity is the quality of having or the presence of people from a wide range of differences in ethnic and social background, gender, sexual orientation, religion, language, political views, nationalities, socioeconomic status, ableness, age, etc.
Diversity in content strives to represent these differences and bring to the forefront populations that have previously and currently remain marginalized and underrepresented. The goal is to provide a more accurate representation of broader society in content.
Equity = Fairness
Equity is when all people in a society have fair access, opportunities, and justice. Equity means that resources are distributed impartially and disparities are eliminated. When fair and just practices and policies are instituted, the community thrives.
Equity is not equality. Equality implies that all people are treated as if they were the same, including having identical experiences throughout life. Creating equity in both society and content requires an investigation into and understanding of root causes of disparities.
Inclusion = Invitation/Belonging
An inclusive environment ensures that everyone in a group, society or culture feels invited and welcomed, regardless of differences. Inclusion is achieved when members of a group can fully participate in decisions and development of the group. Individuals must feel the crucial sense of belonging and the opportunity to contribute. Inclusivity advances the opportunities for everyone in the collective.
Inclusivity in content effectively leverages the vast resources of diversity and equity in society and reflects those in products, branding and company culture. Inclusivity, like diversity and equity, promotes an environment that builds and thrives.
